Something in Us Sings: A New Rubaiyat

There was a time when “you would rush and hurry on your way,” but now you find yourself in a sad sort of exile. Illness, unemployment, or simply an unfortunate confluence of small catastrophes have forced you into an unwelcome place of isolation. What will you do? How will you spend your days well? Malcolm Guite found himself in such a situation . . . and wrote quatrains. This sequence of seven poetic works reflect on the sadness (and hope) that can be found for followers of Christ who are suddenly unmoored and alone.

These poems breathe in the inert urgency of a global pandemic and breathe out the fleet-of-foot hope and charity that are endemic to Malcolm Guite’s work. Roger Wagner’s art then draws the heart even further into what the poems describe. To borrow a phrase from Seamus Heaney, here is poetry and art “to set the darkness echoing.”—Andrew Roycroft
