Among the Lilies: The Song of Songs Annotated and Illustrated
Sexual communion between a husband and wife is a joyful gift from God—a gift so important that the Bible contains an entire book of holy erotica: the Song of Songs. In this annotated and illustrated edition of that book the beauty of flesh-on-flesh union is exalted, to the praise and glory of its Creator.
The book opens with an explanation of the various interpretive approaches that have been applied to the Song of Songs and ends with a chapter addressing some of the challenges to marriage that stifle the pleasures of lovemaking for married couples this side of Eden. The heart of the book is the full text of the Song of Songs annotated with helpful notes on what is going on in the text and adorned with art that was created specifically for this book by seven printmakers—two men and five women. Each of the art pieces are given commentary in the back of the book, either explaining how they illuminate the text they accompany or serving as springboards for diving deeper into the sorrows and joys of married life.
Artists appearing in this book include: Laura Ashley, Ned Bustard, Tanja Butler, Rachel Durfee, Craig Hawkins, Elizabeth Marsh Craton, Kathryn E. Mills, and more.
“If our intended purpose is to create and curate beauty and goodness while becoming the same, then surely ‘Among the Lillies’ will deepen our longing to live into that purpose, while expanding our imaginations toward that end. Bold and humble. Comforting and convicting. Redemptively jarring. Read this with the anticipation of discovering who God imagines that we will become.”
