The Art of Sandra Bowden
edited by James Romaine
"Sandra Bowden's art invites
meditation which evokes and inspires the fullness of mind, heart, soul
and strength to form more faithful biblical character in the viewer. Her
works are classics in their ability to communicate beyond her time and
place to other persons of different ages, races, classes, and religious
traditions."
—Dr. Doug Adams, Professor of Christianity and
the Arts, Pacific School of Religion and the Graduate Theological Union,
Berkeley, California.

"Sandra Bowden’s
priestly works move between the medieval and the present, the church and
the world. They are islands of hope to those who seek refuge in the confused
language of art today, where we may begin to see integration of the spiritual
and the physical. This book is immensely important to bring Bowden’s
works into a proper context, and to give them the attention that they
deserve."

"The work of
Sandra Bowden exemplifies that artists of faith do not need to imitate
the trends of the day, but can pioneer into new territories and still
produce work that is fully contemporary. It is my hope that her example
will inspire many fellow Christian artists . . ."

"President of Christians in the Visual Arts (CIVA) Sandra Bowden
has had a busy summer. Not only has she been preparing for her art exhibit
at the Barrington Center for the Arts called Icons and Logos: The
Art of Sandra Bowden, she's published a book to go with it: The
Art of Sandra Bowden. Bruce Herman says it best in the foreword that
“Simply put, Sandra Bowden is a phenomenon . Though she has not,
to my knowledge, held a formal teaching post at a college or university,
she has infected countless people with a love of art and art discourse.”
The infection has reason to spread further with Bowden's new book, an
impressive compilation of artwork produced over the last forty years.
In the “Books” section, Terrance E. Dempsey travels through
her collection of illuminated manuscripts and book covers, observing that
“Sandra Bowden is one such artist whose entire artistic oeuvre refers,
directly or indirectly, to manuscripts, and she approaches her art as
a practicing Christian. Her work, however, is not based on easy nostalgia
or sentiment. Bowden reveals her keen understanding of the major artists
of the twentieth century and she hearkens back to the work of Byzantine,
medieval, and Renaissance artists.” Other sections of the book include
Language, Archaeological Findings, Crucifixions, and Materials."
